So often, a song that I love by John Mayer comes into my mind as I am shooting a young woman. The song ” daughters ” is a sweet reminder to me that the children we are raising have a more significant role in the world then simply by being a rich addition to our families lives. The admonishment that we need to be keenly aware that our actions and words effect the children we are raising.

I heard once that even if you aren’t aware that someone is watching, even admiring you then you need to be. We all feel irrelevant and almost invisible at times. This idea of having a bigger responsibility than ourselves is an important awareness that I know would better our world. Knowing that the choices and words you speak have a direct effect on young people that you are likely not even aware of. Mindfulness. This idea that there is a cause and effect to everything we do. We help to enhance or tarnish the people we love. It is that simple. Celebrating them and their uniqueness or tearing them down.

“Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters, too”

John Mayer / Daughters

Let’s celebrate our young women. Help them to value themselves more than what the world will tell them they are worth or how valuable it thinks they are. Let’s see a movement of using only edifying and loving words when it comes to our children and the children of others.

Others are watching and imitating you and it may actually surprise you at how differently the next generation can be if we use are words and actions to edify and enhance our children. Let’s see an end to self hate and unworthiness.

Elevate true radiance which only comes from knowing the beauty that lies within each and every one of us.
